The 10 Commandments of Job Interviewing

  1. Thou shalt look up both the company and the interviewer on LinkedIn and Google before the interview.
  2. Thou shalt not ask about compensation or benefits.
  3. Thou shalt not offer references unless asked.
  4. Thou shalt not ask questions thou canst find the answers to online.
  5. Thou shalt send both an emailed and a handwritten thank you note within 24 hours of the interview—consider also thanking any executive assistants, administrative staff, or recruiters who assisted in setting up the interview.
  6. Thou shalt enquire into next steps and the hiring time table.
  7. Thou shalt get a business card for each person you interview with.
  8. Thou shalt ask if you can provide any additional info that would be helpful—this gives you a qualified reason to follow up later. Then, when you follow up later, it demonstrates follow through.
  9. Thou shalt notify your references of your application, confirm that they’re willing to serve as references, and make sure your social media profiles are consistent with how you want to be perceived by employers.
  10. Thou shalt follow up by email a week after the interview then every two to three weeks thereafter (unless you’ve been informed of a longer time table).
